Kathy Schiffer is a correspondent and blogger for the National Catholic Register. Her freelance articles have appeared on Aleteia, Zenit, the Michigan Catholic, Legatus magazine, the Kresta in the Afternoon blog, and other Catholic periodicals. In 2011, Kathy was one of 150 Catholic bloggers from around the world selected by the Vatican to attend the first-ever Vatican Blogfest in Rome.
Since 1993, Kathy has served in a variety of positions in Catholic and Christian organizations.
At Ave Maria Radio, as Director of Publicity and Special Events, she organized conferences on the Catholic Church and culture. She also served as producer for Al Kresta’s insightful radio broadcasts, first at “Talk From The Heart” on evangelical station WMUZ-FM in Detroit, and later for the syndicated “Kresta In the Afternoon” on WDEO-AM in Ann Arbor.
At Guest House treatment center for Catholic clergy and religious, Kathy served as Communications/Media Relations Coordinator. During her tenure, Kathy edited a 50th anniversary commemorative book, None Too Early, None Too Late: 50 Years of Recovery and Renewal at Guest House. She also organized major fundraising events including the annual Detroit Bishop’s Dinner, Portland (ME) Bishop’s Reception, Chicago Cardinal’s Dinner, Guest House Golf Classic, and the “Giving In Style” Celebrity Fashion Show. She also planned and implemented a 50th Anniversary Reception at the Vatican Embassy in Washington D.C. which was hosted by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Through her efforts, Guest House was entered in the newly published New Catholic Encyclopedia, available in print or by on-line subscription.
At Legatus, an international organization for Catholic business leaders, Kathy was Conference Director. She organized an international pilgrimage to Rome and other locations each September, as well as a pro-life conference in Washington, D.C. in May, and an international summit each January.
She worked for five years in the Office of Academic Affairs at the University of Detroit Mercy, where she pursued graduate work in Religious Studies.
Kathy has previous experience as an instructor in two Detroit-area business schools: Dorsey School of Business, and Detroit Business Institute – Downriver.
Kathy earned a B.A. in Sociology (summa cum laude) from the University of Michigan. While working at the University of Detroit Mercy, she completed coursework for the Master’s in Religious Studies.
She serves on the Board of Directors of Mother And Unborn Baby Care, a pregnancy help center in Southfield, Michigan.
Kathy and her husband, Deacon Jerry Schiffer, are proud parents of three grown children: Jennifer, now living and working in the Detroit area; Jeffrey, an architect and entrepreneur in Greenville, South Carolina; and Jerry, a restaurant manager in Orlando, Florida. Kathy and her husband are members of St. Linus parish in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, where Jerry serves as deacon and pastoral associate.
