Family Who Lost Their Toddler to an Alligator Is Identified–and They’re Catholic

The story that’s tugged on everyone’s heartstrings for the last twenty-four hours is the horrible report out of Orlando, that a two-year-old child was snatched by an alligator while playing and watching an outdoor film with his family near Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian Hotel. As the search dragged on, we checked back to see if there were updates–and our hearts broke as the hours passed with no report.

Finally, the boy’s body has been recovered.

The family, as it turns out, is Catholic; and early reports are that a Catholic priest has been with them, offering comfort and prayers during the heart-rending wait.

They are from Elkhorn, Nebraska, near Omaha, and attend St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The church issued the following statement:

Dear St. Patrick’s Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of a tragic loss in one of our parish families. As many of you have heard from national and local media outlets, there was a child deemed missing at one of the Walt Disney World Resorts in Orlando, Florida. The family of Matt and Melissa Graves have lost their two year old son, Lane. The Graves are members of St. Patrick’s Parish, and their daughter, Ella, attends our school. Please honor their privacy at this time and keep them in your prayers.

Christ’s Peace,
St. Patrick’s Parish and School

May Lane find joy in the arms of Christ. May his family find comfort, knowing that he has gone before them, but that they will be together again in heaven. God help them.

We pray for them, and for the sweet little innocent boy that was taken. I cannot think of anything more devastating than to lose a baby in such an awful way in a place that is supposed to be the happiest place on earth. All else is immaterial. I have been to Disney 58 times (my family of origin lives in Florida and I grew up there) and this is the first time this has ever happened. This is an unimaginably dreadful tragedy. It could have been avoided by (1) telling people why the lake is not to be used for swimming.(2) having the same kind of shark fence used at some resorts in the Florida Keys and Australia and Hawaii. (3) pay hunters to keep as much dangerous wildlife out as humanly possible. There is a lot of dangerous wildlife in Florida- sharks, snakes, gators, jellyfish, amphibians, insects, etc.-and people from the Northern states are sometimes not aware of this. I am so saddened by this whole tragedy, it is just so awful. Prayers for the little guy, and for his grieving family.

The dag alligator WAS ONLY 7 FEET LONG! When mom and dad quickly realized they weren’t going to pull the kid out of the animal’s mouth………….PICK UP THE ALLIGATOR, BRING IT UP ON THE BEACH, FLIP IT OVER, STOMP ITS THROAT OR GRAB SOMETHING TO STAB IT IN THE EYES. TO KILL IT.

There must have been many other men around there. A 7 foot alligator is tiny, relatively.

Please tell me why the hell it matters if they are Catholic or not? They’re people…humans….they lost a child. Their religion is immaterial.

I sit and ask myself why is there so much hate in this world we all live in. I have two beautiful granddaughters that ask me the same question when they happen to hear by accident Grandma what’s going on? I just don’t have the heart to tell there little innocent minds what’s going on. I just wish we loved as much as there is hate. It’s just sad to know just how many people in the world hate others.

This is truley unbelievable. A little soul has died and people are using this devastation for their own selfish agenda. For those of you that spout out about the faith of these people who have lost their child, they are practicing Catholics, and by announcing their faith, it allows not only Catholics, but all people to come together and express their condolences. What must this family be thinking as they read some of these posts, that the death of their precious child is smeared with controversy….shame on you!!! If you are not Catholic, why should it matter to you what faith they proclaim to be? If this article stated they were Baptist, why, as a Catholic, should it matter to me? All of you that are off track, you are selfish. May God Grant this family peace and the grace to have the strength through the Eucharist, to forever remember their living child and know someday they will be United by the body of Christ for eternity. May their tears be wiped away through the love of their Catholic community. The loss of a child is the most painful thing to experience. Be ever so mindful…..

This is a tragic event. The setting is confusing. A family on holiday, uninformed, unaware and unfamiliar with and about the environment at an unfamiliar “fantasy” setting that cost $2,000.00 per night. More dollars than sense?
Who’s on first? What’s second? Is this about thirds or Trinity? What and where is Home? All participants and witnesses are part and parcel of this tragic event. It’s not a question of quantifiable fault. Sin is sin, and a child has drowned …at Disney Wolrd …and he was Catholic …and?

This story has just stayed with me all week, including the lives taken at Pulse Night Club. These poor parents have lost their precious child and there is a huge void in their family. I think both of these cases are tragic because of the circumstances. We as Catholics feel anyone’s loss regardless of the religious views, ethnicity, and more so when it’s a sudden tragedy. We are family whether were close by or whether were in another state or country. We will continue to pray for all affected and may God sustain them in the coming months. May they feel the presence of God and Mother Mary in their life. Right on Charles! : ) Catholic and proud!

        Dear Betty,
Perhaps you care about ALL people but my experience with the Catholic church has been, they don’t care about LGBT people at all. As a matter of fact, they just want us gone. I would point out that the first page of this sight doesn’t have even one word about the 49 dead people in Orlando. I would also point out the lady who seems to run this site, Kathy Schiffer, hates us to the point that she refers to us as “LGBT bullies.” When we object to being called names or being fired for being gay or losing our rented apartment and homes because we’re gay? We are not people who are speaking up in our own defense and advocating for ourselves. No no no.. We are bullies.
The fact is many Christian, Catholic or otherwise, feel we should be dead (or worse). There are Catholics and Evangelicals all over the Web actually celebrating the deaths the occurred in Orlando on Sunday..I had my priest and many other Catholics tell me that the RCC is clear. We are horrid and deserve whatever awful crap we get in life.
Pope Benedict said, “The proper reaction to (violent) crimes committed against homosexual persons should not be to claim that the homosexual condition is not disordered. When such a claim is made and when homosexual activity is consequently condoned, or when civil legislation is introduced to protect behavior to which no one has any conceivable right, neither the Church nor society at large should be surprised when other distorted notions and practices gain ground, and irrational and violent reactions increase.”
See? If we ask to have laws in place to protect us from gay haters and discrimination (which happens all the time) …We shouldn’t be surprised when violent reactions increase.
You know, I was raised with this kind of hate towards LGBT people. The priests in my church REALLY made clear just how much God hates the gays…so I spent a great deal of my life despising myself for who I am.
At one point I was on my knees 3-4 hours a DAY praying …”Dear God, please stop this!” MAKE ME BETTER!”
        I tried EVERYTHING…
Nothing worked. I spent decades hoping I would just die ..
One day, after attempting suicide because I just could not get over being so gay .. I woke up in a hospital bed and the shrink that was there had a long talk with me. I told him everything .. and how I tried everything known to the human race to get rid of this gayness .. and how I begged God to fix this horrible thing that He had done to me.
The doctor said, “God cant’ fix what isn’t broken.”
I went out and found another faith that doesn’t hate me and I don’t feel the need to hurt myself anymore.
In any case.. I’m glad you have such a kind heart and care.
I just thought you should know much of the RCC wants us dead.
Be well and many blessings to your and yours.

Maybe if gays would stop forcing themselves where not wanted, and stop trying to frame Christian bakers, florists and the like so they could sue them, trying to drive innocent mom and pop businesses into bankruptcy, maybe more of the public would care more. But its kind of hard to summon up much sympathy for a minority group that wants the rest of US broke and impoverished, yanno?

          • BC June 18, 2016 at 4:55 pm

And ‘where not wanted” says it all

Sorry you have such a dim view of the Catholic church and Catholics in general. Certainly there are Catholics who hate LGBT people, and vice versa. You need to read the bible and especially the Catholic Catechism of the church that is online, and in hard cover. The Church does not condemn anyone because we are all God’s children, created in His image and likeness. The Catholic church and faithful Catholics do not condemn anyone. Love the sinner, hate the sin. We love murderers, rapists, all sorts of sinners, but we do not love their sins. WE are ALL sinners, our sins vary with our age and circumstances in life. Faithful Catholics try to avoid sin, pray daily, go to Confession regularly. If a person goes to Confession and says He hates someone or some group, he cannot be forgiven-he must have a firm purpose of changing his behavior and thoughts. On the other hand, many LGBT people have condemned us and other Christians for being prejudiced. Again-love the sinner, hate the sin. We pray that all will repent of their sins. Please inform yourself. Go to a Catholic church. Many people with same-sex attraction live chaste lives. Go to a COURAGE meeting in your city if you can find one (call the diocese). Meet others who have SSA but are living chaste lives, just as many single Catholics and Christians do. But NOT without God’s grace. I will pray for you. And if you get all your info from the mainstream media, you are woefully misinformed. We have never in my lifetime (nearly 80 years) have had such biased and shoddy reporting. George Soros must be running the whole show…

          Dear Chris,
The Roman Catholic Church does NOT hate you and they do not want you gone. I am sorry for any Catholics who have ever told you that they wanted LGBT’s dead. I know hundreds of Catholics who would agree with me. The ones you are speaking of do not represent the true Catholic Church. Please know that I love you as a fellow human being. I believe that every human being has an equal right to life and that every human being’s life should be protected from harm … including anyone who is LGBT. My heart grieves for all of the lives lost in the Orlando shooting, and for their families. That shooter was wrong! I’m so sorry for all that you’ve been through. I’m glad that your suicide was not successful. I wish you happiness.

She was very angry with God until one day she had a vision of her late son telling her that he is happy with Jesus now . After that vision, she no longer grieve but praised God and began to serve HIm wholeheartedly through his church.

The only reason I cared that the family was Catholic was that I identified with them a little bit more. Also, having a grandson near the same age as Lane brought it closer to my heart. Obviously, I care about people in general and do not wish any tragedy upon them. However, personal connections move people towards greater empathy.

What bothers me most are judgmental comments about the parents in these types of stories. No matter what, they still need love and support during a very trying time.

I am truly sorry for this families loss. A child taken form his mother so early. I disagree that we ado not inform that we are Catholics. It’s time again to profess our faith in the church once again to the world. Besides the pope we are none existent. We should have a sense of pride in our chosen faith and share it. The catholic church is losing members too rapidly because we don’t share our beliefs with anyone. Like we hide our Catholicism except each Sunday head for the pew. Maybe it wasn’t warranted to show it here but I stand with the fact that we should be proud Catholics and share it..

I don’t understand why people make such a big deal out of the heading. Why should the heading matter? Whether they put religion, location, hair colour, gender, political view etc in the heading, point is that the heading doesn’t matter. The main point here is the tragic and painful story inside the article and the fact that the community is doing their best to comfort the family’s loss. We all have to put aside our differences and boo boos about the heading and pray for them and wish them a comforted future. May God Bless this family. Hopefully they find happiness and know that every disappointment is a blessing in disguise. God took his baby home.

My thing is, if these bodies of water are not meant for people to be in day or night, and you know there are gaters in the water, why not just put up a tasteful, attractive fence to keep people out of water, and gaters away from park visitors? A simple wrought iron fence would keep this from happening again. Keep people are wildlife separated! Don’t tell me the Disney Corp can’t afford wrought iron fencing near waterways!

I have often tried to imagine what losing a child would feel like just to prepare for the worst. Always, I felt so horrified I could not comprehend living beyond such an event.
As weird as this may sound, I never conceived of such an act of nature even though I was born and reared in the marshes of south Louisiana. After imagining such emotional test, though its no real comfort, at least it wasn’t a rapist pedophile that tortured him for days on end. Imagining he were my own, somehow, in some obscure way, I could find some comfort knowing he wasn’t subjected to such an evil human cruelty. Having been around gators all of my life, I know it ended quickly.
My whole heart hurts for you. May GOD bless you.

Is that your idea of showing sympathy??? That was a backhanded bit of sympathy, aiming right is the face of all Catholics and priests. You vulgar piece of garbage. who do think gives the most humanitarian care in the world? Who feeds clothes houses and provides medical and mental health care…not the homosexuals that invaded the Catholic priesthood, that’s for damn sure. I’m a Catholic and proud of it, and I’m OFFENDED by your remark. Priests are far more educated than your homosexual pedophiles on the street in parishes schools and the AMERICAN BOY SCOUTS.. oh you say homosexuals aren’t pedophiles?? Then why were they feeling up little boys in church?? Why are 85% of the new HIV/AIDS cases in boys 13-18. That is below the age of consent isn’t it sparky. ??

MINE DOES. I am a Christian but I’m no doormat. I am sick to death of your kind biting the hand that feeds you and pays for your HIV/AIDS medications.

You are quite possibly the most vile and poor excuse for a follower of Jesus that I have ever seen. Oh wait….by your comments you do NOT follow the teachings of Jesus. You are mean spirited and ignorant. I will pray for YOU.

I have often tried to imagine what losing a child would feel like just to prepare for the worst. Always, I felt so horrified I could not comprehend living beyond such an event.

you tried to imagine what losing a child would feel like to prepare for the worst ( like it’s inevitable)…a bit morose and no parent would want to imagine that.

Always, I felt so horrified I could not comprehend living beyond such an event.

Really you are so full of the anti Christ, you smell like it .

      • Jyoti Patrina June 16, 2016 at 8:35 pm - Reply

Shame on you Carmen, to turn this child’s death into an excuse to go on a three post rant of hatred and bearing false witness. Even down to accusing others of being possessed. As a Catholic, you need to go to confession and do penance for your litany of deluded and lying hate.

By the way, speaking as a female who was victimized sexually as a child…. pedophiles and homosexuals are not the same thing. Not only did you bear false witness against the millions of homosexuals that do not rape children, you dismissed the experience of the millions of women who were the victims of sexual abuse. SHAME ON YOU

Also, I find it interesting that YOU are the one that instantly equated pedophiles and priests in this conversation. The person you falsely and vainly accused of being possessed by the antichrist spoke a truth… that having a child die is less horrible than having a child raped before they die… YOU are the one that instantly assumed it was about priests.

Wow Carmen. You are the Catholic that gives Catholics bad names. I am so embarrassed for you. You sound extremely ignorant and rude on many levels. If that was JC you were talking to…… may God have mercy on your soul.

Rest in Peace little angel. I pray the family will have strength during this journey of loss.

Does is truly matter that they are CATHOLIC, a family lost a young child in a horrific way and your article is more concerned to state that they are CATHOLIC! Get off your high religious horse and pay for the family regardless of religion!

    • Jana June 16, 2016 at 4:51 am - Reply

I thought that was an odd thing to end headline with, too. It made it sound as if the fact they were Catholic somehow changes things.

    • Paul June 16, 2016 at 5:11 am - Reply

It’s not about being on a high horse. We are a catholic community who share the same faith and support one another through prayer. Stop judging.

    • KAE June 16, 2016 at 5:13 am - Reply

No one that is Catholic will think that is strange that the article mentions the families faith.
To ones who are Catholic it says the state of grace this poor baby’s soul was in when it left this earth.
He was baptized and free from original sin.
That is a comfort to ones who believe and follow the Catholic faith.
Please don’t read in anything that isn’t there in the Parish’s statement.
God bless this family in this most difficult time.

I am catholic. But it’s strange for me. Your interpretations are deep, but statement doesn’t talk about that. Just capturing readers attention. The statement dosn’t talk that a child was baptised. It is logic to suppose that, but we don’t know that, we know only the fact that the parents are catholics. I know catholic parents, who procrastinates their child’s baptisme for the years… So – just interpreations about mentioning “catholics”…

The caption on this article intimates that Catholics are marginal, unusual, and rare. how suprising is that? is the writer a muslim? baptist, protestant? homosexual?
