“The name of God is mercy. There are no situations we cannot get out of, we are not condemned to sink into quicksand.”—Pope Francis
The message of God’s mercy has been paramount in Pope Francis’ papacy. This year, during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, the Holy Father invites all humanity to an intimate and personal dialogue on mercy.
On Tuesday, January 12, Pope Francis’ first book published as pope, The Name of God Is Mercy, will be released in 86 countries. The book is a 100-page account of the Holy Father’s free-wheeling interviews with Italian journalist Andrea Tornielli. From Jorge Bergoglio’s recollections of childhood to his ministry to prostitutes and prisoners in his early priesthood, the Pope shares the early experiences which have shaped his faith and have helped to chart the course of his papacy. “God does not want anyone to be lost,” Pope Francis told Tornielli. “His mercy is infinitely greater than our sins.” He wants people to understand that the Church “cannot close the door on anyone.”
